About Symi island

Symi is located in the Southern Dodecanese, north of Rhodes and close to the coast of south-west Turkey. With its gorgeous neoclassical architecture, it is often regarded as one of the most beautiful islands in Europe. Symi is just over 13 km north/south and about 8 km east/west with an area of some 68 square km. Symi is divided into distinctive areas - Yialos is the main harbour. Chorio, literally ‘village’, is the top town. Pedi Bay is the valley below Chorio, south of Yialos. Nimborios is the bay and settlement to the north of Yialos. There is a small settlement at Marathounda and a major Monastery complex at Panormitis.

The Kali Strata is the main walking route between Yialos and Chorio. It started off as a small goat track, but was developed in the 19th century by wealthy Symiots who wanted a more pleasant (and comfortable) way to reach their houses than the alternative routes. It starts at the back of the square in the southwestern corner of the harbour and is about 500 steps up to Chorio, with many interesting 19th century mansions lining the way.

Getting there

There is no airport on Symi, which is partly what makes it so peaceful. Getting to the island therefore involves either a ferry trip from Greece’s main ferry port at Piraeus near Athens, or a flight to one of the neighbouring islands and a short ferry trip from there.  Rhodes is by far the most popular arrival airport, but Kos is an alternative, and there are direct flights to both, not only from Athens but also from many European airports. Regular ferries from these two islands will get you to Symi. Unless you have your own boat, of course.
